On a regular basis, we hear the tragedy of another life lost to the drug epidemic — not just in Ohio, but in our nation. Lives with such potential — each with his or her own story — and dreams and goals that didn’t include falling into a substance abuse disorder.
In the wake of what our nation and our state are facing, schools must have these tough drug prevention conversations. National research has shown these conversations are vital — in fact, children are up to 50 percent less likely to use drugs when their parents or another trusted adult, like a coach, talks with them about drug use.
As a mentor, it can be challenging to know how to start the conversation or even what to say. That’s where Start Talking! comes into play. Gov. John Kasich and First Lady Karen Kasich launched Start Talking! to give parents and other trusted adults the tools to start the conversation with youth about the importance of living healthy, drug-free lives.
The initiative takes a multi-pronged approach to drug prevention and includes free tips to help get the conversation started. You can learn more about the resources available at StartTalking.Ohio.Gov or email Info@StartTalking.Ohio.Gov.
